Frequently asked questions
How does Wealth First score on the five pillars?
Wealth First passes four of five pillars: sunrise, leadership, iron fortress, and free cash flow, with the moat grading partial. The leadership grade rests on a 33-year founder record and the owned wind-down of the prop-trading book in FY26. The fortress is the cleanest pillar: zero debt in every year of the record. The moat is cultural and real but not yet structural.
Why is the moat only partial for Wealth First?
DalalBytes grades Wealth First's moat partial because distribution moats are shallow by construction: trail yields are set by AMCs and SEBI TER cuts, scale is a fraction of peers (Rs 13,647 crore AUA, 33rd in MF distribution), and switching costs are behavioral. The culture moat (home-grown RM corps, referrals) is real but the two emerging moat candidates, the AMC and insurance cross-sell, are unproven. It upgrades if Lakshya scales through FY27-28.
What are the five pillar grades?
Sunrise: PASS. India's retail financialization is structural: SIP flows, the shift from physical to financial assets, and trail commissions that compound as AUA grows. Wealth First went from about Rs 1,000 crore of MF AUM in 2017 to Rs 13,647 crore of AUA by June 2026. The honest limitation: the sunrise is a market beta, and a 12-14% correction compressed FY26 AUA growth to 4.6%.
Leadership: PASS. Ashish Shah is a founder with a genuine 33-year record, a voluntary listing framed as "for accountability," and the cleanest recent "did they do what they said" answer: the prop-trading wind-down to zero, executed across FY26. Promoter holding has sat at 74.00-74.04% for eight-plus years with zero selling and zero pledging. Deductions: key-man risk, the related-party WFAPL deal (founder's 10.62% beneficial interest), and a dual-role independent director.
Moat: PARTIAL. The culture moat is real: home-grown RMs trained two to three years, referral-led acquisition, education-before-investment, no sub-brokers. But trail yields are set by others, scale is a fraction of peers, and switching costs are behavioral. The AMC and insurance cross-sell are unproven moat candidates.
Iron Fortress: PASS. Zero long-term debt in every year of the record; Rs 150.5 crore of equity against Rs 29.5 crore of liabilities; Rs 120 crore of long-term investments. The company wound down the trading book with internal resources, paid dividends through the noise, and funded the WFAPL first phase without raising equity.
Free Cash Flow: PASS. A capital-light annuity: negligible capex, standalone FY26 CFO of Rs 72 crore and FCF of Rs 71 crore, dividends every year since 2017. Watch item: receivables spiked 87% in FY26 (debtor days 36 to 40).
What changes the grades?
Moat upgrades to pass if Lakshya AMC launches and scales through FY27-28, or if combined AUM crosses Rs 20,000 crore with client retention intact. Leadership downgrades on any adverse related-party finding or a second earnings-volatility episode. Iron Fortress or FCF downgrades if receivables keep building or the company levers up for acquisitions.
