Frequently asked questions
How does Sterling Tools score on the five pillars?
Sterling Tools passes one of five pillars: iron fortress. Sunrise, leadership, moat and free cash flow grade partial. The fortress is a net debt free standalone fastener parent, net worth of Rs 526 cr, borrowings of Rs 147 cr at March 2026, interest cover near 9x, and zero promoter pledging. The partials share one root: the EV rebuild, after SEM revenue fell from Rs 380 cr in FY25 to about Rs 37 cr in H1 FY27 and FY26 free cash flow fell to Rs 5 cr.
Why does free cash flow only grade partial?
Consolidated operating cash flow was Rs 124 cr in FY25 and Rs 56 cr in FY26, and free cash flow fell from Rs 50 cr to Rs 5 cr as inventory days rose to 172 and the cash conversion cycle stretched to 136 days. H1 FY27 operating cash flow was negative despite a reported profit, and the FY27 capex plan was then raised to about Rs 135 cr. The standalone business still generated Rs 83 cr of operating cash flow in FY26, which is why the grade is partial and not fail.
Pillar 1: Sunrise, PARTIAL. Is the demand sunrise real?
Over fasteners, the light is steady: Indian vehicle production set records in FY26, standalone income grew 11.4%, Q2 FY27 standalone income hit a record Rs 228.0 cr, and commercial vehicle programs plus a Tata Passenger Vehicles entry keep the core growing. Over the EV businesses the timeline moved: management said EV adoption has shifted by nearly 3 to 5 years, SEM's anchor customer insourced, and breakeven is now targeted for FY28. A real sunrise with a delayed dawn for the growth book: PARTIAL.
Pillar 2: Leadership, PARTIAL. Did they do what they said?
The core record is excellent: 47 years, a number two national position, 90 to 95% utilisation, a 15% standalone EBITDA margin through a steel cycle, about Rs 64 cr of new FY26 wins, promoters at 64.86% with zero pledging, and a dividend raised in the worst consolidated year. The deductions are concentration and sequencing: a subsidiary reached over 94% dependence on one customer before it broke, mix and profitability timelines slipped by years, and the finance chair changed in October 2026 as the strategy reset: PARTIAL.
Pillar 3: Moat, PARTIAL. What defends the position?
Qualification and trust in fasteners: safety critical parts, years of vendor approval, over 2,000 live part numbers across nearly every Indian OEM, steel pass through by arrangement, and an aftermarket of 18 warehouses and over 100 distributors. In EV parts there is no comparable moat: every product rests on a partner's licensed technology (Gtake, AEM, Landworld, GLVAC, Meishuo, Haohang), and Ola proved the customer itself is a competitor once volumes justify a captive line. Real in fasteners, absent yet in the growth story: PARTIAL.
Pillar 4: Iron Fortress, PASS. Can it survive a siege?
Yes, at the level that matters. The standalone parent is net debt free, net worth is Rs 526 cr, borrowings were Rs 147 cr at March 2026 (debt to equity about 0.28), interest of about Rs 10 cr is covered roughly nine times by consolidated EBITDA of Rs 93.7 cr, pledging is 0.00%, and share capital has been flat at 3.63 cr shares. The reservation is direction: borrowings rose 38% in six months to about Rs 203 cr and the cash cycle stretched to 136 days. PASS, with the borrowing trend as the downgrade trigger.
Pillar 5: Free Cash Flow, PARTIAL. Does the cash show up?
It did, and then the rebuild absorbed it. Free cash flow was Rs 73 cr in FY24 and Rs 50 cr in FY25, then Rs 5 cr in FY26, with H1 FY27 operating cash flow negative despite a reported profit, against a capex plan raised to about Rs 135 cr. The spend is on named assets (fastener capacity, OBC lines, the Bengaluru STML plant), which mitigates but does not change the delivered cash record: PARTIAL.
What would change the grades?
Sunrise upgrades if SEM passes Rs 40 cr of revenue in a quarter. Leadership upgrades if the FY28 breakeven lands on the reset timeline, and downgrades on any new subsidiary concentration above 40% in one customer. Moat upgrades if an EV line wins a second anchor OEM on jointly owned technology. Iron Fortress downgrades if borrowings pass Rs 250 cr or pledging appears. Free Cash Flow upgrades on a full year above Rs 60 cr with the capex plan intact, and downgrades on a second consecutive year below Rs 10 cr.
