Frequently asked questions

How does Polycab score on the five pillars?

Polycab passes 3 of 5 pillars. Sunrise PASS: a Rs 1.01 lakh crore industry growing at an estimated 13 to 14% CAGR to FY30. Leadership PASS: Project LEAP's Rs 20,000 crore FY26 revenue target was delivered at Rs 28,884 crore, 44% above target. Moat PARTIAL: 30 to 31% organised share behind distribution and qualification lists, now contested by UltraTech and Adani. Iron Fortress PASS: net cash of Rs 4,520 crore with debt to equity of about 0.02. Free Cash Flow PARTIAL: operating cash flow rose to Rs 3,747 crore in FY26, but conversion was weak in FY22 and FY24.

What would change Polycab's pillar grades?

Moat upgrades to pass if Polycab holds 30% plus organised share through FY28 with wires and cables EBITDA margin inside the 11 to 13% guide while UltraTech scales, and downgrades to fail if share or margin breaks the guide for two consecutive years. Free Cash Flow upgrades if operating cash conversion of PAT holds above 100% across a full metal downcycle. Iron Fortress is re-graded if net cash turns to net debt to fund Project Spring.

Is the demand sunrise real for Polycab?

Grade: PASS. India's wires and cables industry reached Rs 1.01 lakh crore in FY26, demand growth is estimated at 1.5 to 2.0 times real GDP, and Motilal Oswal puts the industry on a 13 to 14% CAGR path to FY30 on transmission, renewables, data centres, railways, defence and housing. H1 FY27 revenue rose 46% and wires and cables grew 44% in the half. The honesty note inside the pass: a large slice of the current rate is copper (from $9,652 a tonne in April 2025 to a $12,968 peak in February 2026), and Q1 FY27 domestic volume growth was low-to-mid single digits. The sunrise is structural measured over a cycle, not in one metal-inflated half.

Has leadership delivered at Polycab?

Grade: PASS. Project LEAP, set in FY21, promised about Rs 20,000 crore of revenue by FY26; delivery was Rs 28,884 crore, beaten by 44% and crossed a year early. Organised share rose from 18 to 19% in FY19 to 30 to 31% in FY26. Project Spring capex guidance was met in FY26 at about Rs 1,480 crore, and the dividend payout walks the promised path (26.3% in FY25, 27.2% in FY26, guided above 30% by FY30). Deductions: exports are behind pace (5.4% of revenue against a 10% FY30 target), and guidance was held, not raised, after the record Q2 FY27. Founder Inder T. Jaisinghani still chairs and runs the company, with the second generation in executive roles.

How wide is Polycab's moat?

Grade: PARTIAL. Three measured layers: distribution (3,900 plus dealers, 1,90,000 plus retail outlets), qualification (utility, railway, defence, metro and data centre vendor lists earned over years of testing), and scale with integration (26 plants and the Ryker Base copper rod joint venture with Trafigura). The outcome is a 30 to 31% organised share, about three times KEI. Why partial: the product is copper and polymer built to a published specification, and the moat is now tested by entrants with their own distribution and metal: UltraTech started commercial production in September 2026 (Rs 1,800 crore plan, 11 lakh km plant, Hindalco in-group, India's largest building materials dealer network), and Adani is entering through Kutch Copper. The cables core (70 to 75% of mix) is protected by qualification; wires and retail are contested on day one.

Is the balance sheet a fortress?

Grade: PASS. Net cash of Rs 4,190 crore at March 2026 and Rs 4,520 crore at September 30, 2026, borrowings of about Rs 272 crore, debt to equity of about 0.02, and net worth of about Rs 12,006 crore. The record capex year and a Rs 47 a share dividend (about Rs 708 crore) were funded internally, with no pledging reported and promoters at 61.44%. The character note: this fortress is working capital, with inventory the largest block inside current assets of Rs 14,661 crore, so a sharp copper fall marks it through the P&L even though no lender can call the company.

Does Polycab deliver free cash flow?

Grade: PARTIAL. Operating cash flow rose from Rs 461 crore in FY22 to Rs 3,747 crore in FY26, and FY26 left roughly Rs 2,270 crore of free cash flow after record capex of Rs 1,480 crore. But conversion was poor in FY22 (Rs 461 crore of operating cash on Rs 917 crore of PAT) and FY24 (Rs 1,292 crore on Rs 1,803 crore), because growth eats copper inventory and institutional receivables, faster when metal prices rise. Ahead sit Rs 6,000 to 8,000 crore of Project Spring capex, working capital guided back to 45 to 50 days, and an EPC tail with government receivables. Real, rising, self-funding cash; a conversion ratio hostage to growth and the metal price.

What changes the grades?

Moat upgrades if share holds at 30% plus through FY28 with margin inside the 11 to 13% guide while UltraTech scales. Free Cash Flow upgrades if conversion holds above 100% of PAT across a full metal downcycle. Iron Fortress is re-graded if net cash turns to net debt. Leadership is re-graded on the export checkpoint (10% of revenue by FY30) and on the guidance pattern. The next dated checkpoint is Q3 FY27 results in January 2027: volume growth stripped of metal prices, FMEG margin near 10%, and UltraTech Ultravolt pricing in wires.
