Frequently asked questions
How does Ingersoll Rand (India) score on the five pillars?
Ingersoll Rand (India) passes 2 of 5 pillars. Sunrise PARTIAL: new demand lanes in power, renewables, semiconductors and defence, but revenue grew only 4.1 to 4.2% in FY24 and FY26. Leadership PARTIAL: Sanand delivered about two quarters late and dividends paid exactly as stated, against a missed FY26 growth year and no published guidance or order book. Moat PARTIAL: a 35-year Centac centrifugal franchise against Atlas Copco India at four times the revenue, with brands owned by the parent. Iron Fortress PASS: debt of about Rs 9 crore against Rs 616 crore of net worth. Free Cash Flow PASS: positive in all five years, about Rs 772 crore in total, with conversion above 100% of PAT.
What would change Ingersoll Rand (India)'s pillar grades?
Sunrise upgrades to pass if revenue grows in double digits for two consecutive years on Sanand volumes. Moat upgrades if the centrifugal share is confirmed in a filing and held while Atlas Copco pushes India capacity. Iron Fortress is re-graded if net cash turns negative. Free Cash Flow downgrades if conversion falls below 80% of PAT for two consecutive years. Leadership is re-graded when the company publishes any numeric target or order book to be graded against.
Is the demand sunrise real for Ingersoll Rand?
Grade: PARTIAL. Direction yes, speed unproven. Q3 FY26 commentary named order strength from thermal power, renewables and solar, semiconductors and electronics, steel and defence, on top of the automotive, metals, pharma and textile core, and oil-free energy-efficient machines are the premium frontier of that demand. But revenue grew 4.1% in FY24 and 4.2% in FY26, the two years bracketing the strongest industrial capex upcycle in a decade, because centrifugal deliveries bunch and the standard-machine end is contested. Q1 FY27 growth of 20.3%, the first full quarter with Sanand producing, is one quarter: a direction, not a sunrise. Upgrade test: two more years of double-digit growth on Sanand volume.
Has leadership delivered at Ingersoll Rand?
Grade: PARTIAL. Sanand was approved in December 2022 at about Rs 170 crore, guided operational in Q2 FY26, and inaugurated on October 15, 2025: delivered, roughly two quarters late, with record centrifugal and E-Series output in Q3 FY26. The dividend record is stated-and-did: Rs 50, 70, 80 and 75 a share declared across FY23 to FY26. Against that, the FY25 directors' growth-path statement was followed by FY26 revenue growth of 4.2% and a PAT decline of 4.3%, and the company publishes no numeric guidance and no order book, so there is little else to grade. Sunil Khanduja (MD since November 2024, Chairman as well since July 2026) has one soft year and one strong quarter on the listed P&L.
How wide is Ingersoll Rand's moat?
Grade: PARTIAL. The deep layer: Centac centrifugals packaged at Naroda since 1989, oil-free by design, engineered to order, bought on lifetime energy cost by buyers who requalify vendors slowly; a secondary source puts centrifugal segment share near 50%. Add the oil-free E-Series and an installed base pulling spares and service. The shallow layers: standard oil-lubricated screw is a specification-and-price contest where Elgi operates at three times the revenue; Atlas Copco India (about Rs 5,790 crore of FY25 revenue, unlisted) is the technology benchmark in the same premium categories at four times the resources; and the brands on the machines are group property, licensed into a company minorities own a quarter of. Deep in centrifugals, contested in screws, owned by the parent: partial.
Is the balance sheet a fortress?
Grade: PASS. Total debt of about Rs 9 crore (mostly leases) against net worth of Rs 616 crore, debt to equity at 0.00x in every year FY22 to FY26, derived net cash of about Rs 151 crore, and Sanand plus a Rs 75 a share dividend funded from internal accruals with the share count unchanged at 3.157 crore. Two qualifications recorded without breaking the grade: the fortress is small in absolute terms (Rs 616 crore of net worth under an Rs 11,850 crore market cap protects against lenders, not valuation), and net cash has fallen from about Rs 284 crore in FY22 under the roughly 92% payout. Monitored metric: net cash staying positive through the Sanand build to 2028.
Does Ingersoll Rand deliver free cash flow?
Grade: PASS. The cleanest pillar in the file. Screener-definition free cash flow was positive in all five years: Rs 69 crore (FY22), Rs 133 crore (FY23), Rs 158 crore (FY24), Rs 216 crore (FY25) and Rs 196 crore (FY26), about Rs 772 crore in total. Operating cash flow covered PAT in each of the last three years (Rs 274 crore against Rs 256 crore in FY26), and cash conversion printed 104 to 112% of EBITDA for FY24 to FY26. The deductions, insufficient to fail it: working capital is structurally heavy (debtor days near 78, inventory days up to 102 in FY26, funded by 119 days of payables), and capex is stepping up with Sanand. Five years, five positive prints.
What changes the grades?
Sunrise upgrades if revenue grows in double digits for two consecutive years on Sanand volumes. Moat upgrades if the centrifugal share is confirmed in a filing and held while Atlas Copco pushes India capacity, and downgrades if the oil-free mix stalls. Leadership is re-graded when the company publishes any numeric target or order book. Iron Fortress is re-graded if net cash turns negative. Free Cash Flow downgrades if conversion falls below 80% of PAT for two consecutive years. The next dated checkpoint is Q2 FY27 results on November 12 to 13, 2026: whether Q1 FY27 growth near 20% repeats, and the operating margin against the 25.5% FY25 peak.
